LINDA CHRISTENSEN
Party Dress 15x15 private collection
Invariably my work has a consistent set of happenstances. I know this by using hindsight to reflect upon the content of the work. While I am in the process of applying the paint, I have no destination. Really. I don't know anything. I am working instinctively but at the same time I am paying attention to the balance of contrast between line, brush mark, large shapes, small shapes, open space as well as content of information. Am I saying too much? Is it too literal? Is there abstraction, is there repeating of content for continuity? It goes on and on. I switch direction many times as well as the color combinations of the palette. Many times the palette is the last to be solidified.
The painting, "Party Dress" is an example of this type of work. Also there are things that repeat in all my work. A grid, a set of stripes and usually polka dots.
"Looking at a Linda Christensen painting is like watching the process of discovery written across canvas. Her work invites the viewer on a journey from representation to abstraction and off into a world of her own inventing. Christensen’s core subject matter is the human form - the body as an expressive and interpretive vehicle. While based on figurative elements, the pieces are driven by juxtapositions of color, texture, scribbles and marks. Shapes and patterns that wouldn’t seem to follow a logical thread become innate within the context of her work. Somehow we have a sense that a Christensen painting couldn’t have been any other way."
